Building Use and Accessibility and Audit for Refurbishment

Holland Brown Architects carried out surveys of the three heritage buildings, namely, the Art Gallery, Rotunda Museum and CIC (Creative Industries Centre) & Wood End in summer of 2017. We acted as specialist Historic Buildings and Heritage Consultant to Turner & Townsend Ltd who were awarded the commission by Scarborough Museums Trust, undertaken as part of the Resilience Project.

The work consisted of an appraisal of the condition, space usage and potential alterations to the three historic museum buildings on the Crescent in Scarborough’s cultural quarter. All of the buildings are Grade 11* listed. We were also tasked with commenting on the potential connectivity between all three buildings.

We provided an interim report (condition survey and brief report) highlighting main items of concern on all three buildings; and a final report containing more detailed analysis, commentary and recommendations, along with sketch layouts showing potential improved use of spaces.

Audit for Refurbishment

Detailed description and list of defects on all three buildings and outline repair proposals sufficient for the quantity surveyor to provide budget costs.

Building Use and Accessibility

Overview of space usage for each building on each floor; analysis of efficiency of use and circulation; recommendations for short and long-term alterations to meet the Museum’s requirements and aspirations.

Connectivity between all three buildings within the Cultural Quarter

Analysis of the overall site as part of the Cultural Quarter, circulation, views and vantage points, potential physical connections and routes between all three buildings within the historic designed landscape.
