Restaurant Refurbishment, Riccall, York

This Grade II listed property, which was operating as a restaurant, suffered from a severe outbreak of fire in April 2014. The building consists of a central truncated tower (former windmill) over three storeys with a ‘wrap around’ extension to the ground floor. The fire is thought to have started on the first floor of the historic tower, so much of the internal damage to the fabric was caused at this level and to the two storeys above - particularly to the floors, supporting timber structure and staircases. Holland Brown Architects were appointed to inspect the condition of the building and carry out a detailed measured survey. Internal scaffolding was erected to allowed closer inspection of the interior’s fabric and structure, with the intention of reinstating the damaged historic elements. A listed building consent was obtained, with refurbishment works being carried out in late 2014.
