We were appointed by Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd, Kilburn to carry out detailed interior design works on a private country house near Reading, Berkshire. The Grade I listed residence is one of many houses designed and adapted by the architect Sir Edwin Lutyens who is renowned for his traditional ‘Arts and Crafts’ architectural style.

Our focus was on the fit out of the Entrance Hall. The owner of the property wished for oak paneling to be fitted in the ‘Lutyen’s style’ at ground floor level, with a galleried walkway also provided at first floor, supported by oak posts on stone shoes. The key to the success of the project was devising an appropriate rhythm for the ‘hit and miss’ paneling to coincide with existing windows and door openings within the room. Door leafs were also designed with this treatment, so that when closed, would not break the rhythm. All ironmongery is in traditional hand-forged black iron, in-keeping with the oak woodwork.

Throughout the design process, we collaborated closely with Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen, honing details to ensure the best solutions were arrived at prior to final manufacture and installation. The oak work has been lightly fumed, giving a traditional, yet fresh appearance to the room with a degree of warmth. The result is a very fine interior fit-out of exceptional craft and quality.
