The Practice was asked to design a new house on a dual sloping site which was partitioned from the rear of two adjacent gardens.

The site restrictions included avoiding overlooking neighbouring gardens, negotiating awkward drainage issues, a maximum ridge line and imposed footprint area, as well as a need to match the established visual character of the adjacent and nearby properties.

Our solution was to work within the site and design a house of two parts. One part a tall single storey structure allowing a south facing aspect to the living rooms and kitchen. The other part a double storey structure containing bedrooms and bathrooms at upper level with garage, study and cloakroom below. The two elements are linked by the staircase hallway which brings light into the centre of the house.

The property is clad using natural sandstone with clay pantile roof and lead-capped dormer windows. Internally, the main floors are finished with oak boards with matching oak doors and architraves.
