Clients & Testimonials

We have a wide client base, many of whom are repeat clients, ranging from government bodies, local authorities, private estates, churches, colleges, universities, preservation trusts to private individuals with domestic properties. We always strive to give a very high level and quality of service. We provide advice and guidance, often leading less familiar clients through the often arduous routes of the historic building process, most often achieving successful outcomes and it is these challenges which excite us!

From the first site visit to the completion of our project to renovate a 300 year old Yorkshire stone cottage and barn, Holland Brown Architects demonstrated a commitment and knowledge that made the experience a pleasure, and which fully justified their fees.

They understood our requirements and produced a superb design that kept the integrity of the exterior but added innovative features to the interior to maximise available space. The plans were of a high quality and extremely detailed which ensured that the whole scheme, including obtaining Planning Permission in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, ran smoothly.

For the duration of the project they were consistently approachable and prompt to respond. They guided us carefully through the processes of our renovation and clearly itemised the requirements and associated costs involved, thus relieving us of any concerns that we might have had.

We are so glad that we followed up a recommendation to ask Kenny and Geoff to be involved in our project. Their professional attitude and expertise exceeded our expectations and we are therefore pleased to have the opportunity to recommend them to others.

We have used Holland Brown on a number of occasions regarding alterations to our house. Situated in the YDNP, the house and various buildings are listed Grade 1, Grade II* and Grade II. The whole site is also a scheduled ancient monument. The team have an excellent down to earth approach, where they listen carefully to the clients' needs and give first class advice from the outset. I can say that they never promised anything that they could not deliver, and were an excellent sounding board when discussing what was viable and what was not. We are a very historic site, heavily protected by conservation legislation, and HB are experts in negotiating this very difficult field. They dealt with all the requirements for Listed Building Consent and Scheduled Monument Consent and had an excellent relationship with the various authorities involved, especially Historic England. There is no doubt in my mind that the reason we were allowed to do what we did, was because of the faith that these authorities put in Holland Brown as a company. In short, they knew that any job that this firm were involved in would be first class, which is exactly what their designs and specifications turned out to be.

Private Home Owner, Yorkshire Dales National Park

Dear Geoff and Kenny,

The drawings look great and the whole design has absolutely exceeded our expectations on what could be done with the house - thank you!

Marie McKinney, York

Holland Brown were excellent in understanding our requirements, organising plans and obtaining listed building consents. They were excellent throughout the whole process with timely communications - always helpful and responsive.

We would have no hesitation in using them again.

Mick Fox, Client Representative, The Rock of York

I consider that given the task of trying to convince the District Council to approve a planning application for a new build house in the grounds of a Grade ll Listed Building you did an excellent and cost effective job. The standard of detailed written responses that you provided to the long list of Council concerns was very thorough and, in the event, none of them were challenged. It is clear that your knowledge and experience are widely based. The supporting artwork and photography was of an exceptional standard and helped to provide a thorough and easy-to-read presentation. You were extremely proactive and achieved the various timescales that you set out at the start of the project.

John Ward, Private Home Owner

Hi Kenny

Thanks for your plans, specification and information. Having had a quick look through I have to say it is the most comprehensive information we have received in some time for such a project and is a pleasure to receive.

Simon Atkinson, Owner, Atkinson Builders Ltd

We just wanted to drop you a note to say thank you for your help through the planning process. It has been a challenge! But your constant support, advice and calm approach has supported us throughout and is very much appreciated. Many thanks.

We have been very pleased with the work that Holland Brown have undertaken for Thackray Medical Museum during 2014, which has enabled us to develop a much better understanding of the Grade II listed building that we occupy. They provided us with clear information about the building problems and explored potential solutions with us. For our project, it has been especially important to look at the logic of the building and identify how we can use that to best advantage. Holland Brown provided us with clear plans of the building, which captured staff input on operational issues, supported by detailed, well-informed, professional observation and analysis. Clear development options were well presented and open for discussion. From this process, we have produced a development option which our staff and trustees are confident and comfortable with. Holland Brown provided a transparent breakdown of their fees at each stage of the project and invested the time needed to deliver the work agreed, liaising with other professionals where needed. Their input at all stages enabled us to meet our grant funding deadline on schedule. We are extremely pleased with the results of our collaboration with Holland Brown.

Joanne Bartholomew, Chief Executive, Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds

It was clearly apparent from our initial conversation regarding the proposed reinstatement of the building, that you had significant experience dealing with listed buildings and that you were the right person to prepare the submission for the listed building consent application. Prior to your instruction, you provided a detailed proposal breaking down a number of packages aligned to a fixed cost. Having also instructed you to carry out a detailed survey of the building, you subsequently provided drawings which exceeded my expectation with regards to the level of detail. Throughout the process, I have found you to be extremely professional, diligent and responsive. You provided a first class service at an extremely competitive price. I would recommend your practice without hesitation. Thank you again for all of your assistance.

Anthony Brage - Owner, The Spice Mill, Riccall

We are extremely happy with the service you provided. It took away a lot of the hassle from ourselves which was always dealt with promptly. Communication was always good and as clients we were kept informed throughout the whole process. I would have no hesitation is recommending you in the future. The detailing and quality of the drawings prepared were very good and the design was sympathetic to our existing Grade II listed property. The preparation of a Design Heritage Statement was particularly beneficial in assisting with gaining planning approval. The whole process from start to finish was pretty seemless apart from a few Building Regulation hurdles we had to get over, but which were also dealt with swiftly.

Amanda Grimbleby, Private Home Owner

We have used Holland Brown on two residential schemes and the quality and professionalism of their work is outstanding. They ask all the right questions to find out your living space needs, they know and understand buildings and how they can best work for you, then they manage to design stunning spaces which, more importantly, work.

They are not fazed by minute and thorough detailing and they are always willing to invest a lot of time and effort to get things absolutely right. Their natural flair and experience when dealing with listed buildings and traditional materials coupled with their knowledge of contemporary design makes appointing HBA a natural and easy choice.

Construction is a tough business and you need to trust your architects 100%. Get it right at the design stage and this can and will make the whole project experience run a lot smoother.

Wow - what a team!

Holland Brown Architects have advised York Museums Trust on a feasibility study for York Museum Gardens.

The quality of work we received was very high and extremely good value for money. The final report was very professional and will be invaluable in making the case for the project. They provided some really innovative design solutions which really helped to unlock the project and solve some of the space problems. They also listened carefully to what we wanted and came up with an innovative but really workable approach.

The work was thorough and will be the start of our thinking for this major project.

They were reliable meeting the deadlines and on budget.

All projects are a journey and this aspect is very well understood by them. They are extremely flexible and helpful and strive to make things happen for the client

Martin Watts, Director of Knowledge and Learning, York Museums Trust

I engaged Holland Brown to design a large but tricky extension to a Victorian house. The design they produced was excellent and enhanced the property enormously. They provided a personal, thoughtful and efficient service to achieve what was a difficult deadline.

I would have no hesitation in either using them again or recommending them most highly.

Colin Black, Private Home Owner

When we were choosing an architect to help us with a home extension in a conservation area, Holland Brown were a pleasure to deal with from the outset. Before starting the project they took the time to explain the whole process and were very clear about any associated costs. The scheme they provided was thoughtful, sympathetic and exactly what we wanted. Being busy at the time we asked Holland Brown to guide the scheme through the planning process, which they did to a very successful conclusion. At every stage of the project they kept us fully informed and were helpful, reliable and attentive, providing a service that represented a value over and above their fees. We would not hesitate to recommend Holland Brown and look forward to working with them again on future projects.

Jacqueline and Mark Pyrah, Private Home Owners

Holland Brown carried out a Building Condition Survey of York Debtors’ Prison. This Grade I listed building in the English Baroque style forms one part of the buildings that comprise the Castle Museum.

From our initial meeting, they were professional and helpful, discussing exactly what we required of the survey, what use it would be put to and what format we wanted the final report to take. They were a reliable source of help throughout the process, responding to any enquiries swiftly.

The survey itself was carried out thoroughly and efficiently and the report completed to the deadline. The Building Condition Survey has proved to be an invaluable tool in underpinning our Conservation Management Plan and we would have no hesitation in recommending Holland Brown to any institution requiring similar work.

Kate Burnett, HLF Changing Spaces Project Coordinator, York Museums Trust

“We are really pleased that we engaged the services of Holland Brown to design an extension to our Victorian terrace as we had no experience of such a home improvement. We were provided with a full and detailed quote and work was completed promptly and reliably. They listened to our aspirations and provided lots of design and problem solving suggestions for us to consider. They had a 'can do' attitude and often carried out detailed research on our behalf that we would not have known where to begin with. Their attention to detail was very good and we came to completely trust their judgement and recommendations. Their communication was excellent and we appreciated their friendly, generous support and advice throughout the whole process, even after their contracted work was complete. In all, we feel they represent superb value for money and would be delighted to recommend their services. ”

Samantha Hall – Private Home Owner

“I have worked a number of times with Holland Brown Architects and their collaborative and professional style always adds value to any project.  Their in-depth conservation knowledge combined with strong commercial and practical experience gives great confidence across a range of work.  They are enthusiastic in their approach and determined that the client receives the advice they need at a reasonable fee, within the required timeframe.  Their attention to detail and problem solving ability means that I have no hesitation in continuing to commission work from them.”

Helen Stephenson, Project Manager – University of York Estates Department

“I am very pleased with the work for our renovation project. I would highly recommend your services.”

Brian Taylor, Hotel Manager – Ace Hotel, York

“The members of the congregation are delighted with the new toilet and tea-making facilities and are very impressed that they blend in so well with the existing church structure. Equally impressive are the new oak screens and vestry cupboards. Satisfying all the conflicting requirements involved the architects in numerous meetings with the PCC Project Group to consider and evaluate several possible solutions. This commitment to detail and general enthusiasm for the project made it a pleasure to work with them. To avoid disruption of the church during the wedding season the timescale for producing the contract documents and engaging a contractor became very tight but the architects pulled out all the stops and achieved the PCC’s requirements. During the contract period the architect was always available to resolve any contractor issues and to provide drawings and specification details for variation orders when required. This timely involvement and attention to detail ensured that the contract progressed smoothly without dispute.”

Roger Peacock, Churchwarden – St Helen’s Church, Welton

“The environmentally friendly building is an asset to the park and has been well received. There has been an increased number of park users as a result of the enhanced facilities. I would like to thank you for all your assistance and advice with regards to the building.”

Sarah Wright, Park Manager – People’s Park, Grimsby
