Ampleforth College, Ampleforth *

Client: Ampleforth Abbey Trustees

For decades, Ampleforth Abbey and College had wrestled with the notion of centralising its catering facilities to one site as a means of reducing the considerable cost of multiple kitchens and refectories in individual school houses.

Following visits to similar College establishments, a scheme was put forward which extended and re-modelled the building, mainly to the north side. This provided new catering facilities comprising three large refectories offering cafeteria service and twin servery areas at ground floor level, extended kitchen and storage facilities, entrance areas and toilets. At first floor level, the original roof over the central part of the building was removed and replaced with large clerestory rooflights – one to each of the three upper refectories. Matron and staff facilities, together with preparation and service rooms were also provided off the circulation routes.

External finishes match those of the original building of Yorkshire gritstone and roughcast render, but as much as possible of the original stonework was salvaged and re-used.
